Is SH 888 the follow up to GH 688?
No, SH 888 is a completely new product which is an addition to the Ericsson portfolio.

What is new about SH 888?
SH 888 is the first GSM 900/1800 DUAL BAND product from Ericsson. It includes a built-in PC card and infrared communication. It also features EFR (Enhanced Full Rate voice codec) which is an operator dependent feature affording you fixed line speech quality. SH 888 supports both the standard Full Rate speech codec as well as the new enhanced version.

What are the benefits of infrared communication and a built-in PC card?
SH 888's infrared eye and built-in PC card ensure that you can enjoy complete cable-free connection to your PC, laptop or palmtop. If your computer does not support infrared communication you can use an RS-232 cable to connect your phone to the serial port on your computer.

When will SH 888 become available in retail outlets?
This is market dependent but will be available in most from June 1998.

Which Ericsson accessories are compatible with SH 888?
All the accessories from the current 600 series of phones are compatible.

What are the benefits of dual band communication?
Dual band will considerably increase the phone's capacity in densely populated urban areas. SH 888 will switch automatically and seamlessly between the GSM 900 and GSM 1800 frequency bands guaranteeing the best available speech channel. Both voice and data calls can be made with greater speed and efficiency. It also affords the user greater roaming possibilities when traveling abroad. You will be able to roam between GSM 900 and GSM 1800 operators where appropriate commercial roaming agreements exist. Dual band could be compared with a one lane main road becoming a new three-lane highway. The capacity of the road increases dramatically.

I have an SH888 but I haven't an IR-port on my laptop. Do I have to install an IR-program or can I just use the cable?
Yes, the modem in the SH 888 will communicate with infrared anyway so you can use your phone with both cable and IR with a laptop or a PDA without having to change settings each time you change your IR equipment. You need to install the software on the Ericsson mobile phone CD-ROM enclosed with your phone in the package.

Can I use the Ericsson dual band mobile phone SH 888 both in Europe and the US?
No, you can use the SH 888 in any country that have the frequencies GSM 900/1800 MHz, the GSM system used in the US is GSM 1900 which means you can't use the SH 888 there. To see availability of different systems, please go to http://www.ericsson.se/systems/gsm/markets.html
